Grand Quiz “Healty lifestyle redues the risk of Dementia”

There is enough evidence available now indicating healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise, healthy food and productive mental activity reduces the incidence of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. To create awareness among the Medical Student, Alzheimer’s Pakistan Organised GRAND QUIZ “HEALTHY LIFESTYLE REDUCES THE RISK OF DEMENTIA” in the month of September 2015. The purpose of this event was to create awareness amongst the medical students and young doctors that healthy lifestyle could reduce the risk of developing Dementia. A total of 12 Medical Colleges from different cities of Pakistan participated in the Grand Quiz:

  • Khyber Medical College, Peshawar
  • Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore
  • Islamic International Medical College, Rawalpindi
  • Central Park Medical Colleges, Lahore
  • Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad
  • Army Medical College, Rawalpindi
  • Sharif Medical and Dental College, Lahore
  • Rehaman Medical College, Peshawar
  • Rashid Latif Medical College, Lahore
  • Lahore Medical & Dental College, Lahore
  • Shalamar Medical & Dental College, Lahore

In the first phase of the quiz, an awareness campaign was carried out in each of the participating medical colleges and medical students were registered for the Quiz. A preliminary Quiz was conducted in all the respective medical colleges between 14-17 Sept 2015. Top five students from each institution were selected on the basis of the preliminary quiz. These five students comprised the particular medical college team and participated in the Grand Quiz Finale held on the 30th of Sept 2015. Please click here to find the list of five students who topped the Quiz in each of these medical colleges. Famous artist, Mr Adeel Hashmi was the Quiz Master at the Finale of the Grand Quiz.

The Finale showed a close competition between all the 12 participating medical colleges. The Finale started with Round 1, in which a written quiz was taken and four teams namely Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore, Islamic Medical College Rawalpindi, Rashid Latif medical College, Lahore and Army Medical College Rawalpindi qualified for the next round. In Round 2, the above mentioned four teams participated and Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore and Army Medical College Rawalpindi qualified for the last round. The third and final round of the Finale saw a good competition with Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore winning the quiz and Army Medical College, Rawalpindi taking the Runner up position At the closing ceremony of the Quiz, Dr. Hussain Jafri, Secretary General, Alzheimer’s Pakistan presented on the impact of Alzheimer’s Disease in Pakistan and the services that are provided by Alzheimer’s Pakistan in this regard.

He highlighted the urgent need for the government to implement policies and legislation to provide a better quality of life for people with Dementia, both now and in the future. Dr. Jafri is also the Vice Chair of the Advisory Group of WHO Patients for Patients Safety program. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Yasmin Raashid, Patron Alzheimer’s Pakistan said there are around one million PWD in Pakistan but this figure will rise sharply in the future. She called on all stakeholders to develop programmes to raise awareness and improve access to early diagnosis and care. Mr. Zia Rizvi, President Alzheimer’s Pakistan added: “The Quiz has helped in creating awareness amongst the future generation of doctors about this growing problem and also highlight the importance of supporting the people with Dementia and their carers, and also encourage healthy lifestyle changes which may reduce the risk of dementia”. Prof. Dr. Sayed Muhammed Sultan, President of the Pakistan Psychiatric Society appreciated the efforts of Alzheimer’s Pakistan in creating awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementias in the future generation of doctors.

He informed that house that a provincial Dementia project is soon going to be initiated in the KPK province. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Prof. Dr Nishat Maqsood, wife of late Prof. Dr. Humayun Maqsood, Chairman, Medical Advisory board of Alzheimer’s Pakistan. She said that Alzheimer’s is a growing problem and the government and other stakeholders must take immediate actions to tackle this issue as there are no services provided in the country by the state. The Winning teams were awarded trophies and all participating medical colleges were given shield of participation and gifts.
